Rebirth.

A simple notion, turning the mortality of one life into the longevity of many. Pairing a memory implantation with a genetic regrowth process, an individual is granted an opportunity for a second chance. Or a third, or a tenth.

The creator of this process, Dr. Ian Van Hoffryn, changed the world, and his genius, his legacy lives on generation after generation as he himself is reborn over and over to continue his work. It is such aboard Glass Moon, an orbital station containing the genetic legacy of millions, the accumulated knowledge of ages, and a destructive force capable of shattering the warring surface below.

However, something is different this time. Though the people aboard the station expect a hero, ready to return and save them in the recent times of crisis, Van Hoffryn is reborn with no memory, no concept of his many lifetimes of accomplishment. As he struggles to grasp the simplest concepts of himself and his new life, answers are sought toward the nature of his condition. With conspiracy and corruption around every corner, Dr. Van Hoffryn will soon discover the terrible truth behind his death and rebirth one which will forever alter the lives of everyone aboard the station... and the surface below.

Under a Glass Moon eBook Justin Kemppainen

I have read other books by Justin Kemppainen and I really like his writing style. He does well building his worlds with enough detail to be believable but yet not bogged down in minutia. He develops his main characters much the same way.

There is a conspiracy in the book and due to that there is a mystery element to the story, but none of it engages the lame literary techniques all too common to conspiracy and mystery books. There's no overly convoluted story line, no over-done characters, no last minute interjections to make you feel that you've been fooled the whole way through the book. And that's a good thing.

If you want to have your mind blown with an ending that turns everything on its ear, this probably isn't going to provide that. What it did provide was a satisfying ending that made sense and left the story open to a sequel without seeming like it abandons you in the middle of a story.

Under a Glass Moon eBook Justin Kemppainen Reviews

Kemppainen's most recent work is a departure from his earlier forms by a fair sight. Minimalist, tense, and suspenseful, but very different. The characters in Moon live aboard a space station orbiting the Earth of the future, and a war on the surface has isolated them from their home planet. It is into this tense situation that the doctor who perfected a cloning technology and memory transfer process wakes up with one glaring problem

He has no idea who he is.

"Moon" has the earmarks of the classic mystery, full of conspiracy, unknown motives, and unexplained behavior that only a brave few are capable of dealing with. Who can be trusted? As the main characters discover more information, people are threatened, attacked, even locked away.

Familiar to most of his readers, Kemppainen adds a bit of dystopian splash to the story. Like his novel, "The Legend of Ivan", Kemppainen eschews the windy exposition that so many sci-fi writers seem reliant upon to explain their crazy technological advances. Instead, characterization, plot movement, and suspense move the story along with concise explanations of what is what and why.

Unfortunately, I find myself wishing it was MORE sci-fi and less whodunit. It feels very much like a Dean Koontz thriller and not at all like "Legend of Ivan" or "A Fickle Fate", and that disappoints me. I find myself craving more possibility and less knuckle-biting in the novel.

As is usual, there's plenty of violence, though this little gem manages to escape the trappings of foul language in other books by the author. A few characters felt a bit two-dimensional, but to their credit that's only if they were present for less than a chapter anyway.

Overall, "Moon" is a solid read that will keep you reading until the end without any trouble. Suspenseful, almost Hitchcock-like scenes with enjoyable characters and a sci-fi flair help it stand out. Definitely worth a buy, and worth a home in any kindle library.
Still found this book a wonderful read! It was a little predictable.- sort of. But the big twist at the end I did not see coming. Not a waste of time to read and was well written.
This story seems familiar, maybe because science part isn't new idea - just nicely described world that avid sci-fi reader came across before. But it's enjoyable none the less. Technology and science is not the main focus here, it's just a suitable background for uncovering the mystery of what's really going on on the Glass Moon. Story just the right length - characters and events fleshed out just enough to get fast moving plot to satisfactory conclusion.
